Prepare your Stone Soup Vegetable Garden and don’t forget to circle your garden with special ‘magic’ soup stones.  You may want to plant vegetables such as: zucchini, carrots, peas, broccoli, onions, potatoes.

Weed and water your garden together and watch it grow.

Time to eat: Scrub one of the stones very clean and add the picked vegetables, water and seasonings to your pot of stone soup.  Tell the Stone Soup Story.  It is a wonderful story to share with children in a child care group setting (daycare, school, church, Brownies, etc).

Stone Soup Story

A kindly, old traveller came upon a small village.  He said to the villagers, I am a simple Traveler, looking for a place to stay for the night and a warm place for a meal.  "There's not a bite to eat in the whole province," he was told by the villagers. "We are weak and our children are starving.  Better keep moving on."

"Oh, I have everything I need," the traveler said.  "In fact, I was thinking of making some stone soup to share with all of you." He then pulled an iron cauldron from his cloak, filled it with water, and began to build a fire in the firepit in the middle of the small village.  Then, with great ceremony, he drew an ordinary-looking stone from a bag and dropped it into the water.

By now, hearing the rumor of food, the villagers had come out of their homes. As the Traveler sniffed the "broth" and licked his lips in anticipation, the villagers began to feel very hungry indeed.   "Ahh," the Traveler said to himself rather loudly, "I do like a tasty stone soup. Of course, stone soup with cabbage -- that's hard to beat."  Soon a villager approached hesitantly, holding a small cabbage he'd retrieved from its hiding place, and added it to the pot.  "Wonderful!!" cried the Traveler. "You know, I once had stone soup with cabbage and a bit of onion as well, and it was fit for a king." The village Farmer managed to find an onion, then he found, some  potatoes, carrots, and so on, until there was indeed a delicious meal for everyone in the village to share.  Just before he left, the Traveler gave the bag containing the stone to one of the village elders and said, “It was not the stone, but you kind villagers that performed the magic."

Moral:  By working together, with everyone contributing what they can, a greater good is achieved.

Play Doh history: Did you know that play doh was originally designed as a wallpaper cleaner.  Its great similarity to regular modeling clay without the mess or toxicity made Play Doh a great toy.  Joe McVicker became a millionaire before his 27th birthday after releasing the product as a toy.  The first Play Doh Compound came only in an off-white, 1 1/2 pound can and by 1957, there were three additional colors of Play Doh, yellow, red, and blue.

Cooked Play Doh Recipe

Ingredients:

3 cups flour

1 1/2 cups salt
3 tbsps cooking oil
3 tbsps cream of tartar
3 cups water
few drops of food coloring (optional)

Mix all ingredients together in a large pot on the stove, cooking over medium heat – add food coloring just before it forms a ball in the pot.  Knead on a floured surface.  Store it in the fridge in a covered container or zip lock baggie.  Keeps for quite awhile.

This playdoh will keep indefinitely if stored in a covered container (or you can use zip lock bags).

Bubble Recipe

Make your own it is easy and it works well!

Ingredients

9 tbsps liquid detergent
1 tbsp glycerin

Stir together carefully so that the mixture doesn’t froth too much, the glycerin will make the bubbles stronger and last longer. Put the mixture into a large flat dish to allow a variety of bubble blowers to be used.

For homemade bubble blowers, try the following:

  • plastic twisty ties bent into the required shape
  • blowers cut from the lids of plastic containers
  • cotton reels or other plastic tubes such as cardboard wool cones
  • your fingers!

Face Painting Recipe

Here's an easy recipe for homemade face paint. The colors are not as vibrant as the professional paints but the reality is --- your child won’t mind.

Ingredients
1 tsp cornstarch
1/2 tsp water
1/2 tsp cold cream
food coloring

Stir together cornstarch and cold cream until well blended. Add water and stir, then add food coloring. Put different colors into baby food jars or small bowls.  Use a small paint brush to paint designs on your child's face. This face paint can easily be removed with mild soap and water.
